Society names Labour History Review essay prize winners for 2023

The 2023 Labour History Review essay prize has been awarded to Manuel Herrera Crespo, PhD researcher at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, for his essay ‘Porque no ha cambiado nada: The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the end of the Cold War’. The judges commented that this was: ‘A well-crafted, persuasive analysis… Meticulously researched.’ The prize includes an award of £500.

John Russell, teaching associate at Queen Mary University London and managing editor of Cold War History, was named runner-up and receives £200, for his essay ‘ “Not an industrial matter”: The British Trade Union Movement and Zionism, 1936-1967’.

Labour History Review editors Peter Gurney and Paul Corthorn met and congratulated the winners at the Society for the Study of Labour History’s annual general meeting at the Marx Memorial Library on 28 October 2023. The essays will appear in future issues of Labour History Review.

The Labour History Review Postgraduate Essay Prize 2024 is open until 31 March 2024.
