The People’s History Museum is marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Chilean military coup of 1973, by offering an opportunity to join the Manchester museum’s archive team to delve into material from the Chile Solidarity Campaign (CSC) collection.
The event runs from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 9 September. Find out more and book a ticket.
The coup led to international outcry. In its aftermath, individuals and organisations across the UK and internationally rallied round, demanding human rights for the people of Chile and protesting against the violent repression of the country’s dictator General Augusto Pinochet.
Among the material to explore will be:
- Personal papers of CSC Executive Committee member and government minister Judith Hart;
- Minutes from the earliest CSC meetings;
- Correspondence, including a letter from Hortensia Bussi, wife of Chile’s 1970-1973 President Salvador Allende;
- Publicity material for and photographs from events and demonstrations and original posters;
- CSC publications Chile Lucha and Chile Monitor; and
- Newsletters and correspondence from local CSC committees.
A Young Communist League London District Solidarity with Chile banner (below), used at a demonstration in London in September 1974 to mark the first anniversary of the coup is currently on display in the PHM 2023 Banner Exhibition.
Tickets for the event cost £10, concessions £6, with a limited number of free tickets for people in economic difficulty. Find out more and book a ticket.
