Naomi Lloyd-Jones (History of Parliament) and Malcolm Petrie (University of St Andrews) have issued a call for papers for their new Companion to Modern Scottish Political History.
Call for Papers deadline Monday 18 May 2026
The volume will represent a significant historiographical intervention, providing a comprehensive account of Scottish politics from the Union of 1707 to the early twenty-first century as well as a stimulating summary of contemporary trends within the field. The companion will comprise around thirty chapters, arranged into four sections: structures and chronologies; parties and ideologies; themes; and empirical case studies.
The editors now invite proposals for chapters for inclusion in the themes and empirical case studies sections.
The editors are especially interested in chapters that would address the political aspects of:
- Religion
- Regional and local social and economic conditions
- Culture
- Emotions
- Scotland’s relations with Europe and the wider world
The editors are keen to encourage a broad selection of proposals for empirical case studies, and are determined that the volume will reflect current developments within Scottish political history. Authors are free to interpret political and the political as widely as they wish, and the editors will consider proposals that address any aspect of modern Scottish political history. Proposals from early-career researchers and from scholars from backgrounds that remain underrepresented in the historical profession are especially welcome.
Proposals of c.500 words should be emailed to either NLloyd-Jones@histparl.ac.uk or mp49@st-andrews.ac.uk by 17:00 GMT on the 18 May 2026
If you have any questions before the deadline, please contact one of the editors: Dr Naomi Lloyd-Jones (History of Parliament) and Dr Malcolm Petrie (University of St Andrews)
