John Halstead Memorial Lecture 2025: reserve your place

Professor Peter Gurney will deliver the fourth John L. Halstead Memorial Lecture at the John Rylands Library, Deansgate, Manchester, on Saturday 14 June 2025. He will be speaking on ‘The Chartist Revolution’.

The lecture is held annually in memory of the late John Halstead, who was among the earliest members of the Society for the Study of Labour History and served in a variety of posts over many decades, including as editor of Labour History Review and Vice-President.

Peter Gurney is Professor of British Social History at the University of Essex. He has published widely on various subjects, including Chartism, co-operation, and consumer culture. His latest book is an oral history of the impact of mass conscription in post-war Britain. National Service Life Stories: Masculinity, Class, and the Memory of Conscription in Britain.

The annual general meeting of the Society will take place in the morning of the same day at the same venue. Details of the lecture and the AGM will follow in due course.
