Mining the seams: online workshop explores coal industry records

Derbyshire Record Office is hosting an online workshop on 13 October 2021 exploring newly catalogued coal industry collections for Derbyshire and Warwickshire, and a forthcoming project at the Modern Records Centre to bring in and catalogue the central archive of the National Union of Mineworkers.

The Derbyshire and Warwickshire archive contains more than 600 boxes of records, which relate to the miners who worked at the coalface as well as the management of the collieries and the coal they produced. As well as informing people about the opportunities that the collections offer, the aim is to open up discussion between academics and archivists about working together to make best use of coal industry archives for teaching and research.

Titled ‘Researching the Seams’, the online workshop includes contributions from Charlotte Berry of the Modern Records Centre, Dr Cath Feely from the University of Derby, and Dr Ben Curtis of the University of Wolverhapton. The programme is set out below.
